Why can’t I send email when connected to my VPN?

When you are connected to your VPN, your outgoing and/or incoming emails fail. Once the VPN is disconnected, however, you have no problems sending and receiving messages.

Cause:

Every time you connect to your VPN it causes a change in your network settings. Email client software (Outlook, Apple Mail, etc.) may sometimes fail to recognize this network change, and their attempts to connect to our servers for mail collection will fail as a result.

Solution:

Simply quit your email client software (Command-Q for Apple Mail and Alt-F-x on Windows Mail/Outlook) and then restart it. This solves the problem most of the time. If the issue persists, check your mail’s outgoing and incoming settings. You should not use port 25 for SMTP (the default port used by servers to communicate with each other). Always use port 465 and SSL to send/relay email through PSMail.
